The 450/633 (450/635) nm WDM coupler, also known as a wavelength-dependent coupler or wavelength combiner/splitter, is a fused-fiber-based passive optical component in which two inputs at 450nm and 633nm (or 635nm) wavelengths from the two input ports are combined at one output port. Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) couplers, which are a specialized form of fiber coupler designed to permit a number of different peak wavelength optical signals to be transmitted in parallel on a single fiber. WDM couplers either combine the different wavelength optical signals onto the fiber (i.e. multiplex) or separate the different wavelength optical signals output from the fiber (i.e. demultiplex).
 

Fused-Fiber Based 450/633 (450/635) nm WDM Coupler

Such a 450/633 (or 450/635) nm fused-fiber-based optical WDM coupler owes its origin to the fact that for a given coupler, the coupling coefficients and the effective lengths of interaction at two different wavelengths, say 450 and 633 nm, are different. Therefore, the splitting ratios at these wavelengths are usually different. For a coupler to function as a WDM at 450/633 nm operating wavelengths, the fabrication process has to be tailored such that the splitting ratio of the device is a maximum at one wavelength and a minimum at the other wavelength. This implies that for such a 450/633 (or 450/635) nm WDM coupler, all the input power at 450nm emerges at one output port and all the input power at 633nm (or 635nm) emerges at the second output port.
