Optical Coupler 1310/1490/1550nm Fiber Optic Beam Splitter/Combiner
Optical coupler (fiber optic beam splitter/combiner) is a fused-fiber-based passive component that provides a method for splitting optical signals between input and output ports. It splits an optical signal into two or more fiber lines or combines several signals coming from different fiber lines in a single (or more) fiber line. In general, optical coupler components are combiners/dividers of transit signals. Applications include power distribution in optical communication systems, CATV Networks, local area networks (LANs), subscriber networks, etc.

With the fused biconic taper (FBT) method, two single-mode fibers are pulled, twisted, and melted together over a uniform coupling region. The fiber diameter decreases gradually from the input toward the coupling region, where it exchanges power with the second fiber. The component design controls the fraction of power delivered to each of the output ports. By changing the coupling region width W and the tapered region L, the coupling ratio can vary from 1% or less (a so-called tap coupler) to 50%.
Fused WDM and Optical Coupler
Lfiber’s optical coupler can be designed to operate at a single wavelength (e.g. 1310nm, 1490nm or 1550 nm), to be wavelength flat (e.g. insensitive to wavelength variations within a single window, so-called wavelength flattened coupler) or to be wavelength independent (e.g. insensitive to wavelength variations within both the second and third windows, 1260-1360 nm and 1450-1600 nm, or even full bandwidth from 1260 to 1620 nm).
