Singlemode Dual Window 1310/1550 Ultra Wideband Coupler (Wavelength Independent Coupler)

Lfiber’s 1310/1550 dual window wideband coupler is a passive fiber optic component that connects three or more fiber ends, splitting one (or more) input signal to two output signals.

Usually, the coupling lengths are strongly wavelength dependent! Different wavelengths yield different coupling lengths. This characteristic can be used to construct wavelength selective couplers (fused WDM). But wavelength sensitivity is not always a convenient characteristic. If you want to transport signals in both the 1300 and 1550 bands you want them to be processed through the optical fiber coupler without separation. Since Lfiber has invested a great deal of time and effort in developing excellent FBT (fused biconic taper) technology, we can now provide high-quality 1310/1550 dual window wavelength independent couplers that have the same coupling coefficient over an ultra wideband of wavelengths around 1300 nm and 1550 nm.

A “tap” or “tap coupler” is an optical fiber coupler that splits only a small part of the light into one output and leaves most in the other. For example, light may enter at port 1 and 99% may leave at port 2 and only 1% at port 3. This would be a 1/99 coupler or a 1% tap. Lfiber’s dual window 1310/1550 wideband coupler also enable the coupling of the guided power into any ratio desired. They typically have splitting ratios ranging from 1:99 to 50:50, and such optical fiber wideband coupler can be fabricated for any other wavelength wanted.

A tap coupler is essentially an optical beam splitter/coupler with a desired splitting ratio, usually in the range of 1-50%. Such an optical fiber coupler permits passive add/drop of a signal at an optical network node. Such optical fiber couplers function as power taps for monitoring the stability of an optical source, optimizing power budgets in optical networks, accessing Rayleigh backscattered signal from the test fiber in an optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR), monitoring signal level status in a fiber transmission link, and coupling at nodes in bus networks.
