The high power optical circulator (S+C+L band) is a nonreciprocal, passive fiber optic component that is on the basis of the non-reciprocal property of Faraday effect. Its key functionality is directing light sequentially from port to port with low loss in only one direction which results in the separation of signals which travel along an optical fiber in opposite directions. The routing characteristics of the 3-port circulator can be represented by 1 → 2, 2 → 3. This high power optical circulator is functional over the S+C+L band, typically 1540±80 nm. It’s a good choice for many industrial applications including bi-directional transmission network, fiber amplifier systems, optical time domain reflectometers (OTDR), and other advanced optical communication systems. Related Products

High Power Optical Circulator – Principle of Operation

The high power fiber optic circulator is essentially all mini bulk assemblies packed with fiber pigtails. It’s based on the use, precise positioning and alignment of miniaturized traditional optical components such as polarizing beam splitter, reflector prism, Faraday rotator, bi-refringent blocks, and retardation plate, etc.
 
The operation of high power fiber optic circulator is based on two main principles: polarization splitting and recombining together with nonreciprocal polarization rotation, and asymmetric field conversion with nonreciprocal phase shift.
 
There are many ways to construct the high power fiber optic circulator, and all of them involve the non-reciprocal property of Faraday effect. The Faraday effect is a magneto-optic effect, in which the polarization of light is rotated in an optical medium with a magnetic field applied along the light propagation direction.

  • For device with connectors, IL is 0.3dB higher, RL is 5.0dB lower.
  • Bare fiber should not support the weight of the connector. So that if any connectors needed, for the pigtail type it’s better to choose the 900μm loose tube jacket instead of the 250μm bare fiber.
